Do You Own a Kitten - Or Does the Kitten Own You?

There are a LOT of different trains of thought about cats (or kittens).
One school of thought has the kitten enthusiast saying that all kittens need to have human companionship to become 'whole' (whatever that means), another thought is that, when you own a kitten or cats, they are very independent and don't NEED anybody to exist just the way they are, thank you very much! (the bowls of food, the water/milk and the litter box around the house notwithstanding!).
All current and past cat owners will tell you that cats do enjoy bonding with humans, while keeping a very large degree of independence about the when and the where of that bonding.
When you own a kitten, you will discover that they are very choosy about just who they are going to bond with.
They will usually pick out just one individual within the family that (owns?) them, and it may not be the one individual that you think is the 'owner'! One of the dead giveaways about who the kitten/cat bonds with is the very visible signs that are apparent; Who does the kitten sleep with? What lap does he curl up in when you are watching TV? Does he come to anyone when they call? Who can get that kitten/cat to purr just by being around them? I think you are starting to see my point, here.
When you own a kitten, the biggest question and the one that stumps many people the world over is: Why would the kitten/cat pick THAT person, as opposed to (me)? It could have something to do with that person's tone of voice, their behavior, the way they treat the cat, or the kids in the house.
When you own a kitten, or cat, that is very important to consider.
There has even been research into the possible psychic bonding that goes on.
You can keep your own council on that score.
This idea is that the a cat/kitten will be attracted by someone with a similar psychic aura is a little bit beyond where I would actually go, OK? In spite of all of the different schools of thought on why cats/kittens 'latch' onto someone and hold on so tenuously and seem to absolutely ignore others is primarily based on their need to survive.
Let's face it, when you own a kitten or a cat you will find that they love to be showered with love and affection and they will, most of the time, return the same to you! As you are contemplating the need to own a kitten, or a cat, you will find that they do have their own particular ways of bonding, or 'owning' you as well.
This is very different, as you may have read, from a dog's bonding experience with you.
Cats don't actually NEED you, however they will love every minute that you pay attention to them.
Dogs have to BE there in order to have that piece of mind they crave.
Cats can live pretty much without that constant attention if there is not the right KIND of attention available.
Dogs need to be where they can be around someone, almost ANYone.
To own a kitten, or a cat is a very important job.
They need the right attention.
They need to give the right attention.
When they don't find it, they move on...
The proper care and feeding and attention for a cat/kitten is easy to do when you finally realize that it is so much fun to do! Please see below for an interesting offer for a new kind of New Cat Owner Guide.
