How to Limit Barking

Any dog can become a nuisance barker.
It is more likely if your dog is territorial or one that needs to know all that goes on (poodle).
By establishing yourself as the alpha, the leader of the pack, this will greatly decrease barking.
Dogs follow the leader's lead.
What the alpha allows is what the pack follows.
When your dog tells you there is something to acknowledge simply say OK I got it.
Four to five barks is fine but beyond that it's nuisance barking.
I use the 1 -2 -3 method for correcting barking.
1.
First say no in a loud and deep voice.
Clap loudly twice at the same time.
Other options to clapping are a cat hiss and/or a finger poke in the shoulder to disrupt your dog's focus.
2.
If the barking continues after the first correction and is within 5 minutes or less.
Use a spray bottle filled with water.
It is on stream, not mist.
Spray your dog directly between the eyes (forehead) saying no with each spray.
Use 4-5 sprays in a row.
If you show the spray bottle to your hound and it lowers its head, no need to follow through, your dog understands.
3.
If the barking continues within 5 minutes of the first 2 corrections then use the rollover technique.
This technique is very effective but you must do the work of setting up conditions and correcting the unwanted behavior.
Have family members ring the doorbell creating the opportunity to correct your dog.
Have family members dress up in different outfits, walk different, and pretend they are your visitors.
Create the situation of whatever is causing the barking to occur...
then correct your pooch.
Reward good behavior with praise and mix it up with giving small pieces of healthy treats.
Word of caution...
if you have never done the rollover technique to your dog as a puppy, are not an experienced dog handler your dog may try to bite, scratch or pin you.
Go directly to the methods below.
There are products available to correct barking when you are not available.

00...
this is the least time consuming, cheapest and most effective method for limiting barking.
The scarecrow animal control system is a great product that chases away critters.
It has a built in motion detector.
When squirrels, rabbits and other creatures come into your yard causing your canine to bark this product turns on with a short blast of water.
It is as entertaining as it is effective.
You can do the motion detector work yourself by setting up a regular sprinkler, lawn chair and cooler when training dogs to limit their barking.
This is also a great technique to stop digging.
I put the sprinkler where the dog likes to bark/dig.
My lawn chair is next to the faucet.
When the unwanted behavior begins; I reach over and turn on the water...
the dog stops...
repeat as often as necessary till your canine associates the barking/digging with the sprinkler coming on.
Soon your dog will decide it isn't worth the effort and will give up the unwanted behavior.
It is very hard not to laugh watching your dog sneak back to see what caused the sprinkler to come on.
Keeping peace with neighbors is worth every effort.
