Do You Need a Calorie Calculator?

You are what you eat, and unfortunately too many people are eating too much of the wrong foods.
An obesity epidemic is sweeping the world.
That is why you may need a calorie calculator.
What is that? It is of course a device that tells you how many calories you have consumed (or might be thinking of consuming.
) But the best ones - and there are some excellent products on the market - do much more than that.
For example, many are complete nutrition guides, telling you about far more than just calories.
You enter in all the foods you have eaten and the device tells you whether you have met (or exceeded) your particular nutritional targets for the day.
Most are small enough to carry in a pocket or handbag, so you can take it to the supermarket or restaurant, and check on the nutritional value of all the various items (providing your waiter will disclose all the ingredients of your favorite dishes).
Some let you enter all your recipes, so you can quickly check on the calorie count when preparing a meal.
There are many different models on the market, and it is important that you check the features on offer, as all have been programmed in different ways.
Some carry a huge database of foods; others are rather limited.
The good ones allow you to add your own entries to the database.
Many let you set a target for various values - such as calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, sugar, fiber, protein, ad so on - and then they tell you when you have reached your target, or how much more you can consume before getting there.
For many people, having a little monitor that they carry in your pocket, and that tells them when to stop eating, is actually a strong incentive to stick to an eating plan.
The device becomes a conscience in your pocket.
So how do you choose? It is actually not easy, as there is only limited information available.
For some reason, despite their enormous usefulness, these are niche products, somewhat removed from the mainstream.
Not many people seem to own one.
And they come in quite a remarkable range of price points, and with quite varying features.
Some of the cheaper ones are not especially user friendly.
If you are fortunate, you will have a friend who has one, and can recommend it.
A friendly store assistant may let you try out the various models on display.
The online stores carry user reviews, and these can provide excellent guidance.
But do you really need one? No, probably not.
But your body might thank you for it.
